Puerto Rico is considered one of the world's oldest colonies, having been under some form of military occupation or protectorate status since 1508. The U.S. invaded Puerto Rico in 1898 and has maintained its status as a colony through its legal status, economic relationship, and suppression of independence movements. Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens, but they don't have full political rights.
